Why Indians are often judged on lower BMI numbers

At the same BMI, Indian and other South Asian bodies tend to carry more fat — especially around the belly and organs — and less muscle than the European populations the global ranges were built on. That means health risks like diabetes and heart disease can start showing up at a weight that the standard chart still calls "normal". This is why Indian guidelines commonly treat a BMI of 23 and above as overweight and 25 and above as obese, instead of 25 and 30.

CategoryStandardSouth Asian
UnderweightBelow 18.5Below 18.5
Normal18.5 – 24.918.5 – 22.9
Overweight25 – 29.923 – 24.9
Obese30 and above25 and above

BMI is a rough screening number, not a diagnosis — it can't tell muscle from fat. Talk to a doctor before making big changes.

BMI tells you where you are. Calories move you.

Your next number is how much you should actually eat each day. The BMR & TDEE calculator turns your height, weight and activity into a daily calorie target with a protein, carb and fat split.

FAQ

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. At 170 cm and 70 kg that is 70 / (1.7 × 1.7) = 24.2.

What is a healthy BMI for Indians?

Indian guidelines commonly treat 18.5 to 22.9 as normal, 23 to 24.9 as overweight and 25 or above as obese — lower than the global chart.

Is BMI accurate?

It's a screening number only. It can't separate muscle from fat or tell you where that fat sits, so pair it with your waist measurement and your weight trend over weeks.
